The 23 most anticipated movies for 2016

It’s all Marvel, some DC Comics and there’s some animated features in there, made by Disney who owns Marvel!? So yeah, two studios, all super hero stuff.

Chronological order, we do have favorites though :).

 1. Zootopia, March 4

Zootopia poster

Zootopia is a crime adventure film with anthropomorphic animals, of course as luck would have it, the bunny and the fox will be the main protagonists who will have to work together and uncover a conspiracy. Watch the hilarious sloth trailer here.

2. The Divergent Series: Allegiant, March 18

Allegiant posterAllegiant will be the first movie of the two part book adaptation for the Divergent movie series. Starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James the young-adult franchise proved successful despite the abundance of such adaptations to date, many of which failed at the Box Office. Check out the Allegiant image gallery.

3.Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice posterBatman v Superman is suppose to be the sequel to Man of Steel (2013), except in this one we get Batman, Wonderwoman, Aquaman and probably The Flash, hence Dawn of Justice. I am assuming Batman and Superman will start as adversaries but end up as besties to defeat a common enemy.

4. The Jungle Book, April 15

The ungle Book (2016) posterThe Jungle Book is a remake of the beloved Disney movie from 1967. OK, maybe we needed a live action movie with CGI animals and the sexy, sexy voice of Scarlett Johansson as the snake Kaa…..Trusssst in meeeeee……Watch the trailer.

5. The Huntsman Winter’s War, April 22

The Huntsman Winter's War posterI am just gonna say what everybody else is…saying, The Huntsman Winter’s War looks more and more like a sequel to Frozen rather than a sequel/spin off to Snow White and the Huntsman. You can watch the trailer and see some photos here.

6. Captain America: Civil War, May 6

Captain America: Civil War posterSince there’s no Avengers movie coming out this year, this will have to do. I mean literally, everybody from Avengers 2 will be in the movie, with few exceptions but with Ant-Man and Spider-Man added to the mix. So this would be Avengers 2.5 and Infinity War will be Avengers 3. Take a look at the image gallery of Captain America: Civil War.

7. Snowden, May 13 Septmeber 16

Snowden movie posterSnowden is based on true events, which probably everybody heard about already. A CIA employee tells the people that NSA is spying on them. Now he hides in Moscow. Edward Snowden is played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

8. X-Men Apocalypse, May 27

X-Men Apocalypse posterX-Men: Apocalypse is the third movie of the new trilogy and if we judge by the name it feels like it’s the last before they reboot the X-Men series again. This X-Men movie will only include the cast from the new trilogy, not like the mix in Days of Future Past. Directed by Brian Singer.

9. Now You See Me 2, June 10

Dave Franco in Now You See Me 2After the very successful original in 2013, they’ve already made another movie, simply called Now You See Me 2. All of the old cast is there, except for Isla Fisher as Henley, Lizzy Caplan filled in with a new character Lula, and also Jay Chou (Green Hornet) joins the cast…..and Daniel Radcliffe.

10. Warcraft, June 10

Warcraft movie posterWarcraft is based on the popular video game, with the focus on Alliance and the Horde and thier battle against each other and the mutual enemy the Burning Legion. Starring Travis Fimmel from Vikings, Robert Kazinsky and Ben Foster.

11. Finding Dory, June 17

Finding Dory movie posterAbout thirteen years after Nemo, Dory got lost too! Well, no surprises there. Ellen DeGeneres will repeat her role as the very forgetful fish Dory along with Albert Brooks as Marlin, Nemo’s dad. Idris Elba, Diane Keaton and Ty Burrell will also play some new fishy characters. Don’t worry, Nemo’s there too.

12. Independence Day: Resurgence, June 24

Independence Day Resurgence movie posterIt’s been twenty years since Will Smith and a computer virus saved the Earth from an alien invasion and, it’s the tagline for the sequel, “We had twenty years to prepare, so did they”. However Will Smith will not return in the sequel, instead you get Liam Hemsworth and Maika Monroe along with Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman from the first movie. It is a little weird that after 20 years it’s the same President Whitmore is at the head of the US, it’s probably his last term though.

13. The Legend of Tarzan, July 1

The Legend of Tarzan movie posterThe Legend of Tarzan is not an origin story, instead it tells a new chapter of the famous baby raised by gorillas in the African jungle and it involves Tarzan leaving London to see what is happening in his jungle. Starring Alexander Skarsgard as Tarzan and Margot Robbie as Jane.

14. The BFG, July 1

The BFG movie posterAnother remake, another Disney movie (and Walden Media), directed by Steven Spielberg. BFG stands for Big Friendly Giant and it’s based on Roald Dahl 1982 children’s book of the same name. An animated feature was first released in 1989, while this one will be a live action movie involving giants, dreams and little orphan girls.

15.  Ghostbusters, July 15

Ghostbusters 2016 movie posterGhostbusters is an all female (and Chris Hemsworth) version of the 1984 blockbuster Ghost Busters starring Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd. Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy are the new ghostbusters and Sigourney Weaver who starred in the first movie also stars in this one. Seriously though, who you gonna call?

16. Star Trek Beyond, July 22

Star Trek Beyond movie posterI know, this poster sucks, but it’s all they got at the moment. Starring Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Idris Elba, Karl Urban etc, Star Trek Beyond is the third space adventure since the franchise reboot. The fourth movie is also in pre-production and it will be called Call of the Fleets, but that one will probably be released in 2018. It is interesting that both previous movies (Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness) had a May opening while Star Trek Beyond premieres in July.

17. Jason Bourne, July 29

Jason Bourne movie posterAfter four movies we finally get a movie titled exactly after the name of the main character, Jason Bourne. Matt Damon returns to the role seven years after The Bourne Ultimatum was released. Meanwhile there was The Bourne Legacy movie starring Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz and Jason Bourne was not in that one.

18. Suicide Squad, August 5

Suicide Squad movie posterSuicide Squad is the second DC Comics movie to be released in 2016. Featuring an impressive ensemble cast including Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman and Viola Davis, and almost all of them playing bad guys it promises to be the summer blockbuster of 2016.

19. Kubo and The Two Strings, August 19

Kubo and the Two Strings movie posterKubo and the Two Strings is an epic fantasy adventure movie based on Japanese legends and myths. The new stop-motion animation movie is created by the same studio that created Coraline, ParaNorman and The Boxtrolls. Starring Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Rooney Mara and Ralph Fiennes. You can watch the amazing trailer here.

Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange movie psoterYet another Marvel movie, and it’s starring Benendict Cumberbatch as the titular character, and its going to be awesome! Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mads Mikkelsen form Hannibal also star in Doctor Strange.

21. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, November 18

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie posterHarry Potter’s back! Well, not really. Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them is prequel-spin off of the Harry Potter movies, based on the book Harry Potter reads in the series and a book that J.K. Rowling actually wrote after Harry Potter. The movie follows the adventures of the supposed writer of the book Newt Scamander as he tries to find those fantastic and magical beasts. Stars Eddie Redmayne, Colin Farrell, Ezra Miller and Katherine Waterston.

22. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, December 16

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story movie posterRogue One: A Star Wars Story is a the Star Wars movie that nobody really cares because it’s not Episode VIII. But everyone is going to love it and it will make lots of money on the Box Office. Stars Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Ben Mendelsohn. The story of Rogue One is set before the events of New Hope, when a group of rebels is trying to steal the plans for the Death Star.

23. Assassin’s Creed, December 21

Assasin's Creed movie posterWhat a lovely warm Christmas story to finish the year in films. Assassin’s Creed will star Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch/Aguilar, alongside Jeremy Irons and Marion Cotillard. Based on the popular video game.

Well that’s it folks. A lot of remakes, sequels and prequels, super heroes, anti heroes and some good animated feature films. Better luck next year!

Editor’s favorites: X-Men: Apocalypse, Captain America: Civil War, Kubo and the Two Strings, Zootopia and Star Trek Beyond.
